Chris Evert Reveals Cancer Diagnosis

Chris Evert, one of tennis' iconic stars, has revealed that she has ovarian cancer. Winner of 18 Grand Slam titles, Evert announced the diagnosis in an article penned by Evert's ESPN colleague, Kris McKendry. Stage 1C ovarian cancer, a more treatable stage of a disease typically detected at latter stages, was diagnosed in December, following a preventive hysterectomy.

The 67 year-old Evert, who carries the BRC1 gene—which raises risk for breast and ovarian cancer—was found to have an ovarian malignancy almost 2 years after her younger sister, former tennis player Jeanne Evert, died of ovarian cancer in February 2020. Currently undergoing the first of several chemotherapy rounds, Evert said she'd still be offering commentary on the Australian Open, but would do so remotely, from her home in Florida.
